Today, the UK Minister for European Neighborhood Wendy Morton met with civil society representatives to discuss women's rights in Azerbaijan and visited a women's shelter, Report states, citing the British Embassy in Azerbaijan.
Morton stressed the need for all countries to resolve the issue of domestic violence. "Today, I am holding discussions in Baku with ministers, parliamentarians, and activists to promote women's rights and ensure that women's perspectives are heard at all levels. It is excellent that women gained universal suffrage in Azerbaijan nine years before the United Kingdom, but much remains to be done to achieve equality. Today I had the honor to meet domestic violence survivors and listen to their stories in person. Gender-based violence is a significant problem in the world. Adopting the National Action Plan to Combat Domestic Violence in Azerbaijan is a perfect example - I strongly recommend that Azerbaijan sign the Istanbul Convention as soon as possible," the minister said.
