Vasa László on Washington agreements: South Caucasus could become strategic trade corridor

The outcomes of the August 8 summit in Washington, where the text of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was initialed, mark a significant diplomatic breakthrough in the peace process, economist and expert Professor Vasa László, Senior Research Fellow at the Hungarian Institute for International Relations and Trade, told Report.

“This summit represents an unprecedented diplomatic advance in a conflict that has lasted for over thirty years and claimed tens of thousands of lives. Against this backdrop, the Washington meeting symbolizes political will and reflects shifting geopolitical dynamics, as the United States assumes a role long held by Russia,” he said.

László noted that if the parties resolve all outstanding issues decisively, the South Caucasus could transform into a strategic corridor for trade and cooperation.

“For Azerbaijan, the format of the agreements consolidates recent military and diplomatic achievements and opens up economic opportunities. For Armenia, it offers prospects for stability, economic integration, and a reassessment of its foreign policy direction,” the expert stated. He emphasized that practical issues related to border demarcation remain on the agenda.

László also highlighted Hungary’s support for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.

“Hungary welcomes the removal of territorial claims from Armenia’s political agenda as a potential confidence-building measure,” he stressed.
