Armenia is “muddying the waters” in the region, while the US is trying to take Russia's place, Turkish security expert Abdullah Agar told Report.
He said that the main reason for the ongoing tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and in the South Caucasus, in general, is the intention of the official Yerevan to continue the status quo: “With the Lachin road being uncontrolled for a long time, Armenia transported illegal goods to Karabakh. Official Baku ensured road control to prevent this. The situation was brought under control with the establishment of a border checkpoint in Lachin. Thus, Armenia's games were prevented.”
The expert drew attention to the recent military provocations of Armenia: "As a result of the recent provocation, 3 servicemen of Azerbaijan were injured. The Azerbaijani army rightly took adequate retaliatory measures. After that, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke about a new war and accused Azerbaijan. However, the reason is Armenia's attempt to muddy the waters."
Agar also spoke about Russia's attitude to the processes: "Currently, official Moscow's sphere of influence in Karabakh has weakened. The US is trying to replace Russia in the region. This is the main goal of official Washington. Information about joint military exercises between the USA and Armenia worries Russia. Official Moscow has already expressed its position on this."
