Kazakhstan is ready to raise cooperation and exchange of experience on the green agenda with Azerbaijan and other countries in the region to an even higher level, including through work on a project for the transit of green energy to Europe, Zulfiya Suleimenova, advisor and the Kazakh president's special envoy on international environmental cooperation, said on the sidelines of the 10th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Brussels, Report informs.
"Kazakhstan has good experience in reducing methane emissions and flaring them. As is known, methane is one of the serious causes of global warming, its acceleration. And this, among other things, negatively affects the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea, which we share with Azerbaijan and other Caspian countries, which makes such cooperation necessary," she noted.
According to Suleimenova, Kazakhstan has achieved very significant results in reducing routine methane flaring, reducing its level by 80% - from 4 billion cubic meters to just over 1 billion cubic meters per year, she noted, adding that there is room for further improvement in this matter.
"This year, we have already begun work on developing new legislation that will address other aspects of methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, as well as improving the situation in the coal industry and in the production sector in general," the special envoy of the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan added.
Suleimenova also noted the importance of the summit on methane and other greenhouse gas emissions organized in Baku last year as part of the COP29 climate conference, organized by the Azerbaijani presidency in partnership with China and the US, where Kazakhstan also participated.
"We believe that such platforms are very important, since they allow us to learn about existing experience in the world, but also to determine priorities for ourselves," Suleimenova noted.
Speaking about joint projects, Suleimenova recalled the signing of a trilateral document in the presence of the presidents of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan within the COP29 on the development of green energy transit to Europe.
"Today at the conference, the minister of energy of Azerbaijan spoke about this project. I believe that in general, the potential for interaction between our countries in the field of green energy is quite significant. We know that during the mutual visits of the heads of state, a number of documents were signed, including not only on the generation of green energy, but also on the development of its accumulation systems," the special envoy said.
Summing up, she expressed confidence that the dynamics of such interaction and mutual exchange of experience, investments and technologies will continue.
"I am sure that this is only the beginning, and in the future we will see even more joint projects," she said.
