Luca Schieppati: TAP uses AI, drones and satellite monitoring to control pipeline

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) uses AI, drones and satellite data to monitor the pipeline, TAP AG Managing Director Luca Schieppati said during the 30th anniversary Baku Energy Forum, according to Report.

"It is extremely important for us to implement innovative solutions to maintain a high level of industry standards. We use a fiber-optic monitoring system to monitor geohazardous zones in Albania in real time, as well as a seismic monitoring system in case of earthquakes," Schieppati noted.

He emphasized that TAP is actively using advanced technologies to improve the reliability of the pipeline. "We use drones and satellite data in combination with artificial intelligence and machine learning to better understand the current state of the pipeline and ensure its integrity. We also have a leak detection system that allows us to quickly assess any potential risks along the TAP route," said the head of TAP AG.

In addition, TAP uses a virtual simulator to train dispatch personnel and an electronic platform for obtaining permits for technical and engineering work, he said.

"All these digital tools and technologies play a key role in ensuring the stable and safe operation of our facility on a daily basis," he added.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline, the final component of the Southern Gas Corridor designed to transport Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian Sea to Europe, was put into commercial operation on November 15, 2020. The 878 km long gas pipeline runs through Greece, Albania, the Adriatic Sea, and Italy.

Azerbaijan began exporting gas to Europe on December 31, 2020. According to the agreement between Azerbaijan and the EU, by 2027, Azerbaijani gas supplies should reach at least 16 billion cubic meters per year.

As part of the first stage of the gas pipeline expansion, Italy will receive 1 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas, and Albania 200 million cubic meters.
