The Azerbaijani private group of companies GL Group, engaged in energy exploration and production, plans to drill the first horizontal onshore well in Azerbaijan, Report informs citing the company.
GL Group plans to drill Azerbaijan's first-ever onshore horizontal well with a length of about 400 meters, at a depth of 4,400 meters, targeting deep oil formations. This horizontal well is part of a larger initiative that includes drilling three new complex wells at the Kursangi and Garabaghli fields in the Salyan district after a 14-year break in drilling operations at these sites, the information states.
To conduct drilling operations, GL Group announced this week a tender for drilling services, inviting both local and international companies to participate.
GL Group also notes that at the Kursangi and Garabaghli fields, operated by its subsidiary Salyan Oil Limited, they managed to stop a 19-year decline in base production, which is now increasing through operational efficiency programs implemented without significant capital investments.
Additionally, earlier this year, GL Group completed drilling six new wells at the Buzovna-Mashtaga and Gala fields, which are developed by another subsidiary, Taghiyev Operating Company, and to date, production from these six wells has exceeded initial forecasts.
GL Group manages five oil and gas fields across Azerbaijan, including Kursangi and Garabaghli in the Salyan district and Buzovna-Mashtaga, Gala, and Zira on the Absheron Peninsula. The group's portfolio includes operating companies such as Salyan Oil Limited, Taghiyev Operating Company, and GL Technical Services LLC, which provides technical services in the oil and gas industry. In 2024, GL Group acquired a 25% stake in Canadian Gazelle Energy Limited's highly prospective gas license in Türkiye's Thrace Basin.
