Expert: Azerbaijan becoming key partner for Europe in energy security

Azerbaijan is strengthening its position as an important partner in enhancing Europe’s energy security, Strahinja Obrenović, an expert and doctor of energy law and policy, told Report.

Obrenović also emphasized that Serbia and Azerbaijan have become close partners in the energy sector, deepening their cooperation in recent years.

He noted that Azerbaijan plays a crucial role in supplying natural gas to several European countries, which is a key outcome of the European Union’s efforts to diversify sources and reduce dependence on Russian energy imports.

"Thanks to the launch of the interconnector between Serbia and Bulgaria, there is now the possibility to receive Azerbaijani gas, providing an additional supply source alongside existing imports from Russia (for the needs of Serbia and Bulgaria). Developing the necessary infrastructure and concluding gas agreements are critical for further strengthening and expanding cooperation between Serbia and Azerbaijan in this area," said Obrenović.

He pointed out that Serbia, like many other countries, faces challenges with outdated energy infrastructure, much of which was commissioned decades ago, highlighting the importance of bilateral infrastructure projects.

According to the expert, the plan by Baku and Belgrade to achieve Azerbaijani gas supplies of up to 1 billion cubic meters per year to Serbia depends on the availability of gas transportation infrastructure.

"Azerbaijan is undeniably gaining increasing importance in bolstering the energy security of European countries, including those in Southeast Europe. Additional gas supplies provide greater reliability and security amid a complex geopolitical environment," Obrenović added, stressing that this shift was driven by a reassessment of previous energy cooperation models due to heightened tensions between the EU and Russia.
