Energy Ministry: Romania to cooperate with Georgia, Azerbaijan in Green Corridor project

The energy sector is of strategic importance in bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Romania, Pavel-Casian Nitulescu, Secretary of State of the Romanian Ministry of Energy, said at a panel discussion on "Global Cooperation for a Resilient and Sustainable Energy Future" held within the framework of the 30th edition of the Baku Energy Forum and the 13th Caspian International Energy and Green Energy Exhibition on Tuesday.

Report quotes Nitulescu as saying Azerbaijan and Romania have long-standing bilateral relations, and the energy sector is a strategic component of this dialogue.

"Our joint efforts are based on the commitment to strengthening the energy security of our countries. Therefore, I firmly believe that, despite the difficulties, incredible progress has been achieved through regional cooperation. This fundamental principle, which underlies the relationship between our countries, is clearly reflected in the regional infrastructure projects in which we participate," said Nitulescu.

The secretary of state noted that adequate infrastructure and sustainable investments are essential to ensure Europe's energy security:

"To this end, we supported the development of cross-border electricity and gas connections as essential elements aimed at improving energy security, facilitating the free flow of electricity and natural gas, and improving the integration of renewable energy. Romania is consistently working towards diversifying supply sources and creating alternative transport routes."

Pavel-Casian Nitulescu said that Romania is actively participating in a number of regional initiatives in this regard:

"The Vertical Corridor project is important in this regard. This initiative, together with partner countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova and Ukraine, can provide the Central and Eastern European region with access to new energy supply opportunities. Romania is currently working on a 5,000 megawatt high-voltage direct current transmission line that will connect the Black Sea to the country's western border. In addition, we plan to expand this connection with Azerbaijan, Georgia and Hungary through a submarine cable in the Black Sea. In this context, our cooperation with Georgia and Azerbaijan will take place in a project called the Green Corridor."
