Ambassador: Transit of Kazakh oil through Azerbaijan will reach 2 million tons annually

The volume of Kazakh oil transit through Azerbaijan's territory is set to increase to 2 million tons per year in the short-term, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Aghalar Atamoghlanov, said in an interview with The Astana Times, according to Report.

"In recent years, we have seen steady growth in this area, and according to the latest agreements, there are plans to gradually increase the volume of Kazakh oil transit through Azerbaijan. Cooperation in this field is expanding, as evidenced by the first shipment of oil from the Kashagan field to Baku [in January 2025]. It is forecasted that the volume of Kazakh oil transit through Azerbaijan will reach 2 million tons [per year]," said the diplomat.

The ambassador emphasized that Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are also working on improving transport infrastructure according to international standards, including the acquisition of new ships, tankers, and other equipment.

Overall, he noted that energy cooperation is the cornerstone of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

The diplomat added that the export of electricity from Central Asia to European markets through the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan has become a key priority on the regional cooperation agenda. To facilitate this, a high-voltage power transmission cable will be laid across the Caspian Sea bed, creating new infrastructural links between the regions.

"This initiative is aimed at creating a reliable corridor for clean energy supplies to European markets in line with global efforts to transition to renewable sources," he emphasized.
