Bayraktar: Syria to receive up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas annually

In the initial stage, it will be possible to export up to 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Syria annually, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar said at the opening ceremony of the Türkiye-Syria gas pipeline, Report informs.

Bayraktar noted that with the export of gas to Syria, local power plants would be able to resume operations in the near future: "In the initial phase, up to 2 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year could be supplied to Syria. This volume of gas will enable the activation of approximately 1,200 megawatts of installed power capacity."

He emphasized that today's event is a historic moment. According to Bayraktar, the Türkiye-Syria natural gas pipeline is the most important symbol of Türkiye-Syria friendship in the energy sector.

"I thank Syria, Azerbaijan, and Qatar with whom we worked together on this international project. I wish that this natural gas pipeline brings prosperity and welfare to our countries and peoples, and peace to our region," the minister stated.

Alparslan Bayraktar announced the signing of a swap agreement with SOCAR for the delivery of Azerbaijani natural gas at the Türkiye–Syria border. He emphasised that Azerbaijan, which has always stood by Türkiye in both sorrowful and joyful times, has once again demonstrated its unwavering support through this project. The Minister stated that Azerbaijani gas would be exported to Syria via Kilis, and that approximately 6 million cubic metres of natural gas per day would be transported through the Yavuzlu Measurement Station.

Bayraktar noted that with the export of gas to Syria, local power plants would be able to resume operations in the near future.

The Turkish minister said that thanks to the gas exports to Syria, power plants there will also start operating soon: "This project will make a very serious contribution to the normalization of life in Syria, raise people's living standards, and accelerate the return of Syrian refugees."
