Environmental activists from the US have expressed concern about the serious damage caused by Armenia to the environment in the South Caucasus, Report informs.

One of the activists who spoke out for improving the environmental situation in the region was American environmental activist, University of Michigan student Matt Garnett.

He noted that during the illegal occupation of the Karabakh region, Armenia polluted the rivers.

“There was also the danger that the Metsamor power plant in Armenia has posed, and environmental activists and experts have pointed out that this could possibly be one of the most dangerous power plants in the world, and to this day, Armenia has refused to shut it down,” he said.

“Thus, in order to fulfill its own obligations stemming from international conventions, we urge the Armenian government and the private companies operating in Armenia’s mining industries to open the doors to all facilities to international experts specialized in the field of ecology, including the specialized NGOs from neighboring countries, to allow them to inspect the facilities, evaluate and conduct monitoring, take appropriate steps, samples and allow for proper measuring.”

Garnett emphasized that Armenia must protect the environment not only to improve the environmental situation in the South Caucasus, but also to comply with international human rights conventions that recognize the right of people to a clean, healthy, sustainable environment.

A civil activist from the United States, an employee of the Washington and Lee University School of Law, Maryam Danesh, also expressed concern about Armenia’s mining activities, which had “very bad effect on the Caucasus mountains for several years and people living in the region.”

The illegal activity regarding golden mining has a very bad effect on the water sources in the river and in the lake, she noted, adding that it is necessary to protect people from the radioactive and toxic material.
