Umayra Taghiyeva: Azerbaijan has made ambitious commitments to reduce emissions

The Azerbaijani government has made an ambitious commitment - it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by 40%, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva told reporters on the sidelines of the World Climate Action Summit, organized as part of the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - COP28 in Dubai.

"Now all countries should take more ambitious commitments to reduce emissions. And another issue is adaptation. We need to adapt to the new climate," she noted.

According to her, abnormal weather conditions are currently becoming more frequent.

"Sometimes these phenomena are not typical for some regions. They are observed out of season. They are also uncharacteristic in their intensity. Completely unusual processes occur. That is, indeed, the climate has already changed... What can be done here? There are two ways. Scientists believe, that it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. And by 2030, global emissions should be reduced by more than 40%. There are various estimates from 42% to 47%. And only in this case will it be possible to keep the increase in global temperature below 1.5 degrees," Taghiyeva said.

She noted that, according to climate scenarios developed by world scientists, if the temperature rises by more than 1.5 degrees, significant changes will occur in the climate.
