Azerbaijan drafts national waste strategy for 2027–2030

Azerbaijan is preparing a National Waste Management Strategy for 2027–2030, Faig Mutallimov, an official at the Office of the Presidential Representative on Climate Issues, said.

According to Report, he made the remarks on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

"This year, we have taken important steps to improve waste management. A Waste Management Agency has been established under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. We are currently preparing the National Waste Management Strategy for 2027–2030. At the same time, we are improving waste-related legislation and secondary regulations. In other words, we are also implementing the national agenda in this area," Mutallimov said.

He noted that Baku already has a strong waste management system that includes waste sorting, a dedicated recycling industrial zone housing recycling companies, and a waste-to-energy plant.

Mutallimov said it is also important to expand the circular economy agenda to new sectors, particularly as Azerbaijan undergoes an energy transition.

"We are installing more solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles and other technologies. I think we need to consider their entire life cycle in advance," he added.
