Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov participated and spoke at a high-level dialogue on "Advancing the Mountain Agenda, Common Trends and Climate Change" during the Leaders Summit at COP29 in Baku, Report informs, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The high-level event was also attended by Kyrgyzstan's President Sadyr Japarov, Mongolia's President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, Nepal's President Ram Chandra Paudel, and other high-ranking officials.
Bayramov emphasized the importance of mountains not only as home to many people on Earth but also for their natural resources, including water resources, as well as their significance for ecosystems and biodiversity.
The event noted that the melting of mountain glaciers and subsequent disasters such as floods and landslides require systematic measures. The importance of networks like the "Mountain Partnership," a UN voluntary alliance for raising awareness about relevant challenges and mobilizing resources, was emphasized. The need for more work to protect mountain inhabitants and mountain ecosystems, and strengthening cooperation in finding solutions was highlighted.
It was noted that Azerbaijan's presidency of COP29 draws attention to the fact that climate issues related to mountain ecosystems require specific and targeted climate plans for local communities.
