Musician from Guadeloupe: Tambour has become a symbol of resistance against colonialism

The traditional musical instrument tambour has become a symbol of resistance against colonialism and a tool in the struggle to preserve the cultural identity of the people of Guadeloupe, musician and public activist from Guadeloupe, Jimmy Bassien, said during the international thematic conference “Towards the Decolonization of Guadeloupe: Challenges and Prospects” held in Baku, according to Report.

“For us, the tambour is not just a musical instrument. It is the voice of our ancestors, the voice of freedom. Through music, we restore our connection to our roots, pass on the spirit of resistance, and express our aspiration to free ourselves from colonial influence,” he emphasized.

According to the musician, years of French colonial policy have resulted in significant losses in culture, language, and spiritual traditions.

“The French colonial system deliberately destroyed everything that defined our identity as the people of Guadeloupe. We have lost a significant part of our cultural uniqueness. But today, we are making our voices heard — through music and the tambour — striving to reclaim the right to be ourselves,” he stated.

The musician expressed gratitude to the conference organizers, adding that Guadeloupe’s participation in such international discussions is essential not only for political liberation but also for cultural emancipation.
