Farmers need to be convinced through incentives to reduce carbon emissions and to view agriculture as part of the solution to the climate problem rather than part of the problem, EU Special Envoy for Climate and Environmental Diplomacy Tony Agotha stated at a COP29 event titled "From Global Goals to Local Actions: Regional Initiatives for Strengthening Sustainable Agri-food Systems" held in Baku, Report informs.
"Farmers manage a natural process. They probably know more than those of us sitting around the table and have extensive knowledge about climate change and the agricultural sector's dependence on external factors. In this regard, technology and innovation should be used to support the transition to more sustainable agri-food systems and ultimately, a healthier transition. We should reward farmers for their efforts to mitigate climate change, adopt more favorable practices, and invest in appropriate technologies. Continuous support is needed because these efforts are expensive for them. Farmers' incomes are low. Nevertheless, they provide such an important service to all of us," Agotha noted.
