COP29 lead negotiator: Excessive politicization of climate makes it difficult to adopt agenda

The excessive politicization of the climate issue in recent years has made it difficult to adopt the agenda, COP29 lead negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev said, Report informs via Baku TV.

According to Rafiyev, although certain difficulties arise with the adoption of the agenda at the Bonn meetings every year, this should not be like this:

"Before COP28 in Dubai, discussions were held for 11 days. Now, on the second day, serious challenges are being experienced in adopting the agenda. In fact, this is the work of Brazil and the competent subsidiary bodies in the field of climate. However, we were approached to benefit from the positive experiences of Azerbaijan. Because the agenda of COP29 was adopted on the first day."

Rafiyev also spoke about the negotiations and the outcomes:

"Our delegation met with the states for 7-8 hours. As a result, options were developed to reach a common denominator and were ultimately accepted. For this reason, our delegation was thanked by both the states and the chairmen of the subsidiary bodies. In the coming days, we will chair some of the negotiations ourselves. We are scheduled to make official speeches at some of the opening and closing ceremonies. Seven events related to the 14 initiatives put forward by Azerbaijan at COP29 will be held. Those events started today."
