Center for Agricultural Research of the Caspian Region (CARCAS) signed a Memorandum of cooperation with “Hajigabul Poultry” the leading egg producer in the South Caucasus.
The cooperation encompasses a wide range of initiatives in the field of sustainable agriculture, including the development and implementation of innovative solutions for the processing of poultry litter into organic compost. The product obtained through biothermal composting will be used as an eco-friendly fertilizer that enriches the soil and restores its agrobiological balance.
The project includes scientific and practical activities in different spheres:
1. Development of soil nutrient standards based on the agrochemical composition of the compost;
2. Determination of application rates for organic fertilizers depending on soil types and agro-climatic zones;
3. Modeling of optimal composting conditions and ratios, taking into account moisture levels, pH, nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon content;
4. Preparation of a detailed needs map for agricultural areas across Azerbaijan with a priority focus on degraded and depleted soils.
These activities will be implemented within the framework of the “Black Terra” initiatives, which aim to restore and improve the soil balance across the region on a large scale.
This scientific and industrial integration will ensure targeted soil rehabilitation, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers and revive the biological potential of agro-landscapes.
The project lays a strong foundation for regional scaling of the technology and serves as a model for sustainable agro-ecological transformation. The cooperation also includes a planned visit by a working group to Hajigabul to process field assessments and define technical parameters for future facilities.
“We are not just processing waste - we are bringing life back to the land. This is a scientifically grounded, environmentally responsible model for the future of agriculture,” emphasized Rifat Sultan-zade, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of CARCAS Center.
It is also worth noting that the project contributes to the achievement of several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
