Azerbaijan attends conferences on Stockholm, Basel Conventions

Azerbaijan participated in the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal and the 12th COP to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Geneva, Report informs, citing Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The conferences were attended by representatives of member states of these conventions, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN, as well as European and international non-governmental organizations.

Azerbaijan was represented at the event by a delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

The conference discussed legal, administrative and management issues related to the implementation of the conventions in member countries, compliance of national legislation with the conventions, clarification of lists of hazardous wastes, persistent organic pollutants and chemicals, application of information exchange mechanisms, as well as providing technical support to individual states under the conventions.

The conference was also attended by staff members of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations.
