Creating a humanitarian corridor in Ukraine should be the first step, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said at a press conference following an emergency meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Belgium.
He noted that the Alliance imposes heavy sanctions on Russia.
According to him, if Putin continues to take steps, he will face tougher sanctions.
Stoltenberg reiterated NATO's support for Ukraine while adding that the Alliance will never be a direct participant in the war, as this could pose a greater threat to the world.
According to the NATO chief, the international community condemns Russia's actions in Ukraine.
He called on Putin to choose diplomacy to resolve the issue.
