36 Azerbaijanis received Ukrainian citizenship this year

Between January 1 and August 15, 2026, a total of 1,396 Azerbaijani citizens obtained temporary residence permits in Ukraine, 194 received permanent residence permits, and 36 were granted Ukrainian citizenship, Ukrainian lawyer of Azerbaijani descent Shamsi Maharramov told Report.

According to the lawyer, despite these numbers, there are still Azerbaijani citizens living in Ukraine who have violated stay conditions or failed to register their migration status.

"This issue requires particularly serious attention now, as state authorities in Ukraine have been jointly carrying out nationwide 'Migrant' measures since May 22, 2026," he said.

Maharramov advised Azerbaijanis residing in Ukraine to check the validity of their documents and their legal period of stay.

"Our compatriots should take their migration status seriously. If the period of stay has already been exceeded or if there are issues with documentation, one should not wait for state authorities to detect it. Legal remedies should be explored as soon as possible. Violations of migration law can lead not only to fines, but in certain cases to forced return, deportation, and an entry ban to Ukraine," he noted.
