Thai Monk arrested for embezzling $3 million in monastery funds

Thai police have arrested former abbot of Wat Phutthaisawan monastery Phra Wachirayan Wi on charges of embezzling donations and temple revenue, with the damage from his activities estimated at 92–100 million baht (about $3 million).

According to Report, citing the BBC, Phra Wachirayan Wi was defrocked following his arrest and has now appeared before the court as an ordinary citizen.

According to the investigation, the former abbot had regularly embezzled donations and proceeds from the sale of Buddhist amulets and other sacred objects for at least two years.

In addition, Phra Wachirayan Wi was in an intimate relationship with 47-year-old Punyawi Rungruang. Video recordings of an intimate nature involving the woman were found at the former abbot"s home. Law enforcement authorities said Rungruang was his accomplice and helped launder the illegally obtained funds.

During searches of the former abbot"s and his accomplice"s properties, police found cash, gold bars, jewelry and land documents. The total value of the assets discovered was estimated at around $6.4 million.

Rungruang was also arrested and is awaiting trial on charges of aiding and abetting embezzlement. Police believe another two or three people may have been involved in the pair"s criminal activities.

The former abbot could face a lengthy prison sentence, including life imprisonment, as well as confiscation of his assets.

Police traced the former abbot and his accomplice after receiving an anonymous tip in mid-July 2026.
