RAT activated during Boeing 787 crash in India

New video and audio recordings from the scene of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash in India indicate the activation of its Ram Air Turbomachine (RAT), NDTV reported, citing TASS.

The recordings clearly show the RAT’s propeller in operation, while the main engines remained silent — a possible sign of catastrophic technical issues, which may include engine failure, electronic malfunction, or problems with the hydraulic control systems.

Security camera footage shows the aircraft struggling to maintain altitude after takeoff before descending rapidly toward the ground. Initial reports raised the possibility of a collision with birds, but no traces of a fire, smoke, or bird strikes were subsequently found, nor were any bird remains recovered from the runway.

The last messages transmitted by the pilot to air traffic control included: “thrust not achieved”, “loss”, and “signal weak.”

A total of 274 people died in the crash.
