Powerful tsunami threatens Papua New Guinea

A potential tsunami threat was declared following a strong earthquake off the coast of Papua New Guinea, Report says, citing foreign press.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.3 shook inland Papua New Guinea. The South Pacific island nation’s disaster management center said the epicenter was inland near Kokoda and very deep. Shaking was felt in the capital Port Moresby but not strongly.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.0 magnitude quake was 80 kilometers (53 miles) deep. Shallower earthquakes tend to cause more surface damage.
Areas of the country located in the coastal zone within 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake are subject to a warning about a dangerous tsunami.
