Installation of first nuclear equipment starts at El-Dabaa nuke plant in Egypt

The installation of the first nuclear equipment (melt trap) began on October 6 at the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt, which is being built with the participation of the Russian state corporation Rosatom, Report informs referring to the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority.

“The head of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority, Amged el-Wakeel, has given instructions to begin an important milestone towards the completion of the Egyptian nuclear project - the installation of a ‘melt trap’ - the first long-term nuclear equipment,” the authority said in a statement.

The device, installed at the bottom of the reactor shaft, can hold the melt for an unlimited amount of time, preventing radioactive substances from entering the environment.

The nuclear power plant will be located in the province of Matrouh on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, 350 kilometers from Cairo. The total installed electrical capacity of the nuclear power plant will be almost 4.8 gigawatts.
