Former Pakistani PM sentenced to 14 years in prison on corruption charges

A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan to 14 years in prison on corruption charges.

Report informs via Reuters that the politician's wife, Bushra Bibi, received a seven-year prison sentence on the same charges and was arrested in the courtroom at Adiala Jail. Both convicts were also fined heavily, with non-payment resulting in an additional six-month prison term.

Imran Khan and his wife were convicted of receiving land plots as bribes in 2018 and laundering illegal income while managing the Al-Qadir Trust charity foundation, which the prosecution claimed was a cover for their illegal activities.

Imran Khan served as Pakistan's Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. He was removed from office on April 10, 2022, following a parliamentary vote of no confidence. Since 2023, he has been serving a 14-year prison sentence for selling foreign gifts from the state treasury.
