US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, are preparing for their first summit meeting in a year, which is scheduled for November 15, a senior US government official told Nikkei, Report informs.
Biden will visit San Francisco, starting November 14, in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' Meeting to be held in the city. If the face-to-face talks with Xi happen, it will be the two leaders' first such meeting since November 2022.
Biden met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the White House on October 27. During the meeting, Biden said, "Both the United States and China need to manage competition in the relationship responsibly and maintain open lines of communication," adding, "[We] must work together to address global challenges."
With the US presidential election coming in November next year, both Democrats and Republicans are likely to take a hard-line stance toward China. The US hopes to avoid an accidental military clash due to misunderstandings, or a sudden worsening of relations, by maintaining top-level communication with China. The effort takes place against the backdrop of fighting in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Islamist militant group Hamas.
Biden hopes to resume dialogue between the US and Chinese militaries and to make progress in talks over nuclear arms control and other issues. He has also urged China to take a more constructive approach to the Middle East.
