At least 19 people were killed in the crash of a military aircraft belonging to the Sudanese army in the Sudanese city of Omdurman (Khartoum province), according to the Al Arabiya TV channel, Report informs via TASS.
The cause of the incident was a technical malfunction; the plane crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff from a local air base.
The victims of the crash were the crew members and Sudanese military personnel present on board, as well as civilians who were in the residential building on which the aircraft fell. Rescuers continue to clear the rubble at the crash site.
Among the dead is a well-known brigadier general in Sudan, former commander of the Khartoum military district Bahar Ahmed.
The situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023 due to disagreements between the chairman of the Sovereign Council (the country's interim governing body), army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of the Rapid Intervention Force (RIF) Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo.
The main contradictions between them are related to the timing and methods of forming a unified armed forces, as well as who should hold the post of commander-in-chief - a professional military man, which al-Burhan advocates, or an elected civilian president, which Dagalo insists on.
