Volkswagen suspends production of electric cars

For the first time, German Volkswagen was forced to suspend the production of electric cars due to the shortage of microchips, Report informs, citing foreign media.

Prior to this, the concern suspended the production of conventional Golf and Tiguan cars with internal combustion engines based in Wolfsburg. The supply of components for the production of electric vehicles was given priority. Therefore, the lines in Zwickau and Dresden continued to operate almost flawlessly.

Now the chip supply crisis has hit electric vehicles as well. Production of VW ID.3, VW ID.4, Audi Q4 e-tron, and Cupra Born has been suspended for a week. As a result, 5,000 cars will not be manufactured.

Earlier, Volkswagen reported that in the third quarter of 2021, it made 122,100 electric vehicles, which is 109% more than in the same period in 2020.

Electric cars require significantly more microelectronic components than conventional cars. They especially need power ICs for battery management.
