WHO: COVID mortality in Africa grows 72%

COVID-related deaths in Africa has increased by 72% compared to the previous week, Report informs referring to the weekly epidemiological bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, the number of deaths from COVID has decreased by 4% compared to last week. This figure, however, increased in Southeast Asia (by 9%) and the Americas (by 7%). In the rest of the world, the number of deaths from the consequences of the COVID-19 disease has decreased.

In total, about 44,600 deaths caused by COVID-19 were recorded worldwide during the week.

According to the WHO, in the week from December 20 to December 26, doctors recorded about 5 million new cases of coronavirus infection in the world. Most of all, the incidence increased in the Americas (39%). Also, the number of detected new cases of infection in Africa increased by 7%. In other regions, the incidence has fallen over the week or has remained virtually unchanged. The global incidence of COVID-19 for the week increased by 11% as compared to the previous week.

Over the entire period of the pandemic, more than 282.8 million cases of coronavirus infection and over 5.4 million deaths from the consequences of the disease were detected in the world.
