Multilateralism should be adapted to the challenges of the 21st century through necessary reforms, Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations (UN) Office at Geneva, said at the opening ceremony of the 12th Global Baku Forum.
Valovaya noted that global governance should respond to challenges in the modern era: "The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has provided assistance to people in 120 countries. In general, UN structures carry out important work around the world in their respective fields.”
“However, in the modern era, global governance should be structured in such a way that it responds to challenges. Global relations should deepen. Work will be carried out in areas such as sustainable development and the transformation of global governance," she added.
"Hundreds of millions of people have been displaced from their native lands. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are working on this issue. A certain portion of our targets until 2033 remains unimplemented. This wastes millions of dollars.
The UN continues its humanitarian aid against the backdrop of existing crises. Millions of people have been provided with assistance. However, a certain portion of the UN's targets until 2033 has not been implemented," the director general highlighted.
Valovaya emphasized that challenges affecting the world order should be discussed more.
