Nigeria has expressed its readiness to closely cooperate with the countries of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in the fight against climate change, said Minister of Budget and Economic Planning of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the guest of honor at the 17th ECO summit, Report informs.
"At the COP29 conference in Baku, the world community recognized that climate change is no longer a distant threat, but a real and tangible danger. Devastating droughts, floods, desertification and abnormal heat are clear evidence of the climate crisis. Its consequences are already tangible for Africa: deteriorating food security, forced migration and economic shocks are becoming a new reality. In a situation where climate resilience is not just a goal but a necessity, Nigeria, as the most populous country in Africa and an economic gateway to West Africa, declares its readiness for close and equal cooperation with all member countries. We strive to integrate measures to adapt, mitigate the effects of climate change and green industrialization into all areas of partnership," he emphasized.
He noted that Nigeria has already taken targeted and conscious steps to address climate issues. The implementation of the national development program for 2021–2025 is currently being completed, and in parallel, work continues on developing an effective plan for 2026–2030, he said.
