Iran welcomes joint statement of Azerbaijan and Armenia on normalization of relations

Iran welcomes the joint statement by Baku and Yerevan on mutual confidence-building measures, including the release of detainees on both sides, and views it as a constructive step towards achieving a peace agreement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani told a press conference on Monday.

"Achieving sustainable peace in the region requires an atmosphere of trust and cooperation between regional parties," Kanani added.

The Iranian official also expressed hope that negotiations between Baku and Yerevan will bear fruit. According to him, Tehran is ready to help the two neighboring states conclude a lasting peace agreement.
