The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) can help Saint Martin achieve its goal and gain independence, Saint Martin's Parliament member Franklin Meyers said in an interview with Report, while participating in the conference "French and Dutch Colonialism in Saint Martin - One Island, One People, One Destiny" in Baku.
"Saint Martin now has friends in Azerbaijan. The Baku Initiative Group can help us convey our realities to the global community," he said.
Meyers said that the Dutch colonial policy extremely negatively affects the lives of local people and restricts their political freedom.
"No matter how much they talk about autonomy, the reality is that we are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands," he said.
