Burundi suspends football matches over coronavirus fears

The Football Federation of Burundi (FFB) announced the temporary suspension of football activities as the tiny East African nation has finally bowed down to the situation related to coronavirus pandemic, according to ESPN.

Since March 30, Burundi was the only country in Africa and one of only five countries in the world, which continued to conduct football matches, despite the spread of COVID-19.

FFB expects to resume and fully complete the current season before the end of May.

Due to the pandemic, European competitions, except the Belarus championship, have been postponed. Moreover, across the world, football tournaments stand firm in Tajikistan, Nicaragua, and Taiwan.

Burundi, on April 12, confirmed the first coronavirus death in the country, as one of the five patients succumbed to the epidemic.
