Phased electricity production will begin at the Khizi-Absheron wind farm in August 2025, Selim Guven, general director of ACWA Power for Azerbaijan and Türkiye, told Report.
He noted that the first wind turbine was installed in November 2024: “To date, the installation of all 12 turbines at the site in the Absheron region (Gobustan) has been completed, and their launch is expected in the third quarter of 2025. At the same time, equipment is being installed at the Khizi site.”
As Guven emphasized, the full commissioning of the wind farm is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025. The 240 MW Khizi-Absheron wind farm project is being implemented using the independent power generation (IPP) model and is the first large-scale wind energy project in Azerbaijan created on an independent basis. It plays an important role in the country's transition to renewable energy sources.
“Once completed, the wind farm will produce up to 907 GWh of clean electricity annually, which will provide electricity to over 300,000 households,” Guven said.
“This will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 400,000 tons per year, helping Azerbaijan achieve its national goals in sustainable development and decarbonization.”
The wind farm covers the territories of the Absheron (section 1) and Khizi (Khizi section 3) districts, including the villages of Chayli and Sitalchay. The project envisages the installation of 37 wind turbines: 12 in Absheron and 25 in Khizi.
