BIG holds meeting on results of provincial elections in Kanaky-New Caledonia

An online meeting dedicated to the results of the provincial elections held in Kanaky-New Caledonia was organized by the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).

According to Report, representatives from Kanaky-New Caledonia, Réunion, Mayotte Island, the Union of the Comoros Islands, and French Guiana, which suffer from French colonialism, participated in the meeting.

During the discussions, Jean-Baptiste Dialle, a representative of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), which fights for the independence of Kanaky-New Caledonia, stated that the elections were a success for the pro-independence supporters.

However, representatives of the Kanak people expressed regret that as a result of the French government's policies, confidence in the electoral process among part of the population has decreased, and hopes that the path to independence would be resolved solely through voting have weakened. For this reason, the local community did not actively participate in the elections.

Orlane Taristas, a representative of the Ka Ubuntu party, which fights for the independence of Réunion, stated that the success achieved by pro-independence supporters in Kanaky-New Caledonia is of particular significance against the backdrop of serious concerns raised by Paris regarding the transparency of the electoral process.

Former political prisoner and activist fighting for the independence of Kanaky-New Caledonia, Dimitri Qenegei, called the elections successful and assessed them as a path leading to the next stage of the freedom struggle.

During the meeting, a symbolic flash mob was held at the initiative of the BIG in support of the Kanak people and the representatives who won in the provincial elections on June 28. Participants displayed slogans such as "Freedom for Kanaky," "Congratulations," and other messages of support.

In conclusion, meeting participants expressed their gratitude to the Baku Initiative Group for keeping the struggle of peoples suffering from French colonialism in international attention, for the support provided to them, and for the messages of solidarity.
