Inger Andersen: Shallowing Caspian Sea threatens regional food safety

Changes in the Caspian Sea level threaten food safety in the region, Inger Andersen, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said at an event "Caspian Sea Water Decline in light of climate change", held at Azerbaijan's pavilion during COP29, Report informs.
"I am concerned about the security of the region. This problem needs to be addressed as soon as possible, as otherwise up to five million people will be at risk," she said.
She again emphasized the need for Caspian littoral states to unite, as only through joint efforts can the problem of the Caspian Sea's shallowing be resolved.
