Ghanaian delegate: Developed countries must play major role in addressing climate issues

Developed countries must take the leading role in financing climate funds, Eric Kofi Afornorpe, a member of the Ghana delegation, told journalists on the sidelines of COP29, Report informs.

"Developed countries are historically the main environmental polluters, and they should make a significant contribution to solving climate problems. We have created the Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, Loss and Damage Fund, but they are not enough. Developing countries remain without adequate financial support, although they make minimal contribution to environmental pollution," Afornorpe noted.

He added that achieving the Paris Climate Agreement goals by 2030 requires significant financial resources, which are currently lacking.

"We hoped that COP29 would reach an agreement on long-term financial goals. But even if we mobilize $250 billion, it's a drop in the ocean. The Green Climate Fund is depleted, adaptation funding is reduced, and the Loss and Damage Fund remains empty. This creates enormous risks for everyone, especially for developing countries that are already facing the consequences of climate change," the Ghana representative stated.
