Azercosmos ready to help small island states detect climate changes

The Space Agency under Azerbaijan's Ministry of Digital Development and Transport (Azercosmos) is ready to analyze the geolocation of any small island state to detect climate changes or assist in any emergency, Azercosmos representative Murad Jamalov told a panel session on "Ecosystems of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and communities in climate change conditions" held on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Reports.

According to Jamalov, there were no problems with clouds while working on the project in the Caucasus, especially in Azerbaijan: "However, when we approached small island countries, there were problems with images due to cloud cover. But with the help of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and cloud computing, we were able to easily find spatial data. It was very difficult at first, but we had very good tools and a fantastic team to analyze spatial data."

He noted that at least 14 Sustainable Development Goals depend on geospatial data: "I think it's impossible to analyze emergencies in a very short time without spatial data, especially satellite monitoring. For example, we analyzed all forest areas of Papua New Guinea within six months. Six months is a very good period to analyze these areas. Now Azercosmos and our team are ready to analyze the geolocation of any small island state to detect climate changes or help in any emergency. We aim to address SDG-related issues such as hunger, flood risks, or other dangerous matters."
