The new airport will serve to develop Georgia and boost its economic potential, Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told a briefing, Report informs.

According to Kobakhidze, the current annual passenger capacity of Tbilisi airport is 4 million people, and it's impossible to increase this number:

"Considering the tourism growth, it's essential to create new infrastructure. The construction of the new airport serves exactly this purpose. The new airport is planned to be built in the Vaziani area, and work is rapidly continuing to sign contracts with partners."

Kobakhidze added that the first phase of the project is planned to be completed by 2029:

"After the new airport opens, the annual passenger capacity will reach 18 million people. This is a large-scale project that will serve not only Tbilisi's development but also Georgia's development and boost its economic potential."
