Armenia to appeal to EAEU for extension of benefits for its sugar factories

Armenia intends to apply to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) with a request to extend the benefits for the import of raw cane sugar, Minister of Economy Gevork Papoyan said while summing up the year 2024, Report informs via Armenian media.

He added that Armenia received the right to duty-free import of raw cane sugar upon joining the EAEU for 10 years. Now the authorities want to extend this benefit in order to support local sugar production, which works on raw materials imported mainly from Brazil.

He noted that sugar beets are grown in the EAEU countries, but Armenian factories are engaged exclusively in processing raw cane sugar, performing its clarification and crystallization, and not the full production cycle.

For 2025, Armenia also received quotas for duty-free imports from third countries. These include: 9,000 tons of beef, 12,000 tons of pork, 39,100 tons of poultry, 2,000 tons of butter, 8,000 electric vehicles, 500 tons of varnishes and paints, as well as certain volumes of accessories for the sewing industry, which fulfills orders for both Russia and the EU countries.
