Strong tremors occur in mine in southern Poland

Rescuers are searching for 10 miners who lost contact in southern Poland after a strong earthquake in the Zofiavka mine, Report informs citing TASS that the press service of the owner of the mine Jastrz bska Sp ka W glowa (Jastszemba Coal Company) said on Saturday.

According to available information, the incident occurred at 03:40 at a depth of 900 m. "The headquarters has no contact with 10 employees. There were 52 employees in the jolt area, 42 left on their own," the message says.

A powerful methane explosion took place at a coal mine in Pneiewek, southwestern Poland, on Wednesday. Several dozen miners were under the rubble. A second explosion was heard after the start of the rescue operation. As a result, five people were killed, including one rescuer. Up to 20 miners were taken to hospital with severe burns.

Seven miners remain in the mine. Nothing is known about their fate. Rescuers trying to reach them injured themselves as a result of a series of new explosions from Thursday through Friday. No one was killed, but the rescue operation was halted due to dangerous underground conditions.
