The Scottish government will today send a formal request to London about the decision of the national Parliament to hold a referendum on the independence of the region, Report informs, citing the First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party Nicola Sturgeon.
Sturgeon said earlier that the issue of the referendum had been resolved. Regional authorities are planning to submit a request to hold it by yearend. A referendum in Scotland is to take place in 2020.
In 2014, Scotland voted in a referendum to keep the region within the United Kingdom. However, in 2016 there was a referendum on EU membership. The UK as a whole voted to leave the European Union, while Scotland voted against.
