Ka Ubuntu movement leader: 'We fight for Reunion's independence from French colonialism'

The Ka Ubuntu independence movement is fighting for the liberation of Reunion Island from French colonial oppression, the movement's chairman Romain Catambara said at the international conference "Independence of Reunion: A Look at France's Colonial Heritage and the Path to Sovereignty" in Baku, Report informs.

He noted that for five years the organization has also supported the independence struggle of other colonies in Africa.

"Achieving real independence and effectively fighting imperialism is most important for us. We must awaken the political and historical consciousness of our peoples. Every nation should determine its own destiny," he added.

Catambara stressed that many African countries are still independent, although they are formally called such.

"But this is not so. In an independent country, there cannot be military bases of other states, and governance should not be under external control. We have a lot of work to do on the path to freedom for Reunion. We must convey our voice to the international community," the activist noted.

He also expressed gratitude to the Baku Initiative Group, which organized this conference, for the opportunity to openly discuss the problem of France's colonial policy.

"Against the background of our struggle against France's colonial oppression, our presence here in Baku is very important for us," he added.
