Finnish airports switch to alternative systems due to GPS interference

Almost all airports in Finland have been forced to resort to alternative systems due to GPS interference, Report informs via the media group Uutissuomalainen.

"GPS interference from Russia has increased significantly since January last year," Tapani Maukonen, an expert at the Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, told Uutissuomalainen.

Now 14 Finnish airports are using a system based on radar data and a network of ground stations to determine aircraft position for landing.

During winter and spring, the airports of Kemi-Tornio, Joensuu, and Kokkola-Pietarsaari will also switch to this system instead of GPS.

According to Traficom, a total of 2,800 GPS interference cases were registered in Finnish airspace in 2024, while the previous year there were just over 200.
