State Department: Landmine contamination in Azerbaijani territories impedes safe return of displaced communities

To promote regional peace and cooperation, the United States has provided $4.5 million since November 2021 for humanitarian demining operations in areas affected by the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, the US State Department’s official representative said in response to Report’s inquiry.

According to the representative, landmine contamination also blocks economic development and impedes the safe return of displaced communities”

“Given Azerbaijan’s strategic geographic location, we are working with Azerbaijan to strengthen border security to address nonproliferation concerns and to promote and fund humanitarian demining operations.”

“We consistently engage with Armenia and Azerbaijan and help facilitate these talks because we believe that direct dialogue is the key to reaching a final peace agreement. We have been encouraged by recent progress and want to keep up the momentum,” the US representative said.
