Report's chief: New direction in Armenia's foreign policy causes concern in Russia

Yerevan's orientation towards the West will affect Russia's economic interests in Armenia, which causes Kremlin's concern, director of the Report Information Agency Fuad Huseynaliyev said on the air of the 'Relevant Today' program on the CBC TV channel.

"It's about Russia's interests in Armenia, the presence of a large Russian military base in Armenia, economic interests, since most infrastructural objects in Armenia belong to Russian companies. Russia understands that Pashinyan government's walkoff to the West and support from the European Union, France, the United States, namely the initiative of these countries to transition Armenia to the Western track, will also affect the economic interests of the country," he said.

Fuad Huseynaliyev also noted that Armenia hopes for the political and military support from a number of European countries, in particular from France, which may be the reason for the recent consolidation of military facilities on the border with Azerbaijan.

"We have repeatedly heard statements from Armenia that the border between the two countries should be demilitarized, but the troops must be withdrawn to this end. For some reason they forget that there is still no peace treaty between the countries, the borders have not been defined. Naturally, after the borders are determined no one will keep large contingents of troops at the borders, border guards usually stand there, guarding the border. It all happens within the framework of generally accepted world practice. Now we see a reverse action, probably due to the fact that Armenia hopes not only for political, but also military support from a number of European countries, at least from France," the director of Report said.
