Expert: Electricity transmission between Iran, Russia can be facilitated better through Azerbaijan

Electricity transmission between Iran and Russia can be facilitated better through Azerbaijan where its electricity grid is easier to be synchronized for power transmission from Iran, Farid Safari, a Canada-based expert in energy transition and sustainable energy, told Report.

According to the Iranian side, at the moment Tehran is at the final stage of negotiations with Moscow and Baku on the start of energy exchange operations. Exchange options through Georgia are also being considered.

Safari noted that Iran’s power grid is already connected to Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Turkmenistan.

“Iran’s electricity demand is higher in summer, especially due to the need for cooling systems during the heat wave, which is causing the country to face power shortages. With a significant increase in air temperature during summer, net power generation and thermal efficiency of the cycle declines,” he said.

According to Safari, excessive power generation in Russia and the peak demand for electricity in Iran during summertime justifies the project of electricity transmission between Iran and Russia.

However, Iran has failed in increasing its internal electricity generation proportionate to its abundant sources of fossil and renewable energies.

“The contribution of renewables in Iran’s electricity grid can be increased to a much higher value by employing renewable energies such as solar and wind, not only for the sake of increasing national electricity generation but also for enhancing energy security through grid diversification, making new jobs, reducing grid’s carbon intensity and benefiting from global programs on climate change mitigation,” the Canadian expert stressed.

"Вклад возобновляемых источников в энергобалансе Ирана может быть значительно увеличен", - сказал он.
