Aigul Sadvakassova: Kazakhstan managed to turn ethnic diversity into powerful cultural resource

Over the past 30 years, the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan (APK) has done a significant amount of work, Aigul Sadvakassova, head of the Center for the Study of Interethnic and Interfaith Relations at the Kazakh National University under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, told Report.

"The anniversary session of the Assembly will be held on April 24 under the motto "30 years of peace and creation". Kazakhstan has a rich ethnic palette. Our ethnocultural diversity is a huge resource. When cultures unite, something greater is born than one or two such cultures can give. Kazakhstan has managed to use this wealth and turned it into a powerful cultural resource," she noted.

According to Sadvakassova, the results of the 30-year work of the Assembly will be summed up tomorrow. "Peace and harmony are values that must be protected. The Assembly makes a great contribution to maintaining stability: it integrates ethnic groups and prevents conflicts. We have an Ethnomediation Council, mediation offices, and a specialized research institute that monitors the interethnic situation. After all, conflict issues, as a rule, do not arise out of nowhere - they are associated with socio-economic or everyday problems," she emphasized.

In addition, Sadvakassova reminded that the Constitution of Kazakhstan enshrines the basic rights and freedoms of all citizens, regardless of their ethnic origin.

"The President always emphasizes that we adhere to two principles: "unity in diversity" and "we are different, but equal." This is the motto of our Assembly," she added.

The Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan was founded in 1995. It is headed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. This is a consultative and advisory body under the president, the task of this body is declared to be the promotion of the development and implementation of state national policy. The Assembly has 583 members. Regional assemblies have been created in the cities of Astana, Almaty, Shymkent and the regions, they are headed by the corresponding akims (mayors).
